Expertise

The Dolomites tour is aimed at photographers at amateur level and upwards; participants will need a good understanding of their cameras, so therefore, unfortunately, is unsuitable for complete beginners.

The Dolomites Landscape and Night Sky Photography Workshop offers participants a chance to get high above lower cloud and shoot landscapes from awe-inspiring locations, due to exceptional access to high mountain passes and peaks.

Northeastern Italy is home to the Italian Dolomiti,  while the range itself forms part of the Southern Limestone Alps, and probably boasts some of the most iconic and spectacular landscape and mountain scenery within the Alps mountain range.

Because of the high altitudes, mountain peaks, and amazing light, the sunsets can be phenomenal.  Autumn is the chosen season for the workshop, as, consequently at this time of year, the Larch trees littering the landscape are clothed in gold, making for excellent subjects as they reflect off clear mountain lakes, or glisten in the late afternoon sun.

In addition, the night sky and landscape astrophotography credentials of the Domimites is second to none!

Get closer to the stars and witness what some refer to as the “million star hotel” over the stunning mountain passes and Alpine plateaus; constellations are easy to pick out, and as a result distinct ones, such as Orion or Ursa Major, can be placed over jagged ridges, helping to create stunning nightscapes.

Another relevant night sky photography feature is, of course, the Milky Way, which in addition to the mountainous backdrop, can be amazingly beautiful.

Furthermore, areas and locations used for shoots are adjusted slightly according to weather conditions by day, if necessary.

Ollie runs his workshops in a like manner to his own shooting techniques, thus getting the best from the area and landscape, as opposed to fixing locations 100% but then possibly facing unfavourable conditions.

However there is an exception, first of all, Seceda will be visited for both sunset and starlight toward the start of the trip, ensuring a lift up the mountain; whilst the Funes Valley (Val de Funes) will also feature toward the beginning of the workshop.

Other locations include Lago di Braies, Passo Giau, Croda da Lago,  Passo Falzarego and Cinque Torri, Selva di Cadore, and Monte Cristallo!

Furthermore,  much of the Dolomites region, including Seceda and Santa Madalena, is situated within the Trentino-Alto Adige (South Tyrol), an autonomous region with 62% of the population speaking Ladin or German; and other areas, such as Cortina d’ Ampezzo in Veneto, or San Martino di Castrozza in Trentino, have more of an Italian feel and influence.

The aforementioned gives the area substantial diversity in culture, cuisine, and architecture; which can also be savoured in addition to photographic tuition, and travelling, during this workshop.

Post editing sessions will also take place in the hotel function room on Lightroom and Photoshop.

In conclusion, the area is perfect for landscape photographers with an interest in nightscape photography and mountain scenery, whilst at the same time wanting to explore the outdoors and venture into the wilderness.
