TENERIFE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
Tenerife has amazing credentials for astrophotography and stargazing, and like the island of La Palma has protected dark sky status, meaning no airplanes can fly over the mountain and observatory.
In the day, there is a 90% chance the sun is shining on the high mountain roads even if cloudy on the Costas, replaced at night by the stars; furthermore, the lunar, Martian-like landscapes and pine forests give way to an excellent playground for Milky Way, planet, and Zodiacal Light shots, panoramas, star trails, tracked and equatorially mounted images. The day-to-night time lapses that can be achieved above the clouds are mind-blowing.
The landscapes to the north are also diverse, and rugged, with changeable weather suitable for landscape photography.

TENERIFE ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY TOUR – STRUCTURE
The Tenerife astrophotography workshop is aimed at photographers at amateur level and upwards; no previous astrophotography experience is required and the course caters for beginner to intermediate nightscapers; although this course is a natural progression from our short 2-night astrophotography courses and complete beginners may find many aspects complex and only move through some of the workshop tuition.
Having some understanding/experience of night photography is highly advantageous, but not essential as we will work with the group together, and individually, often working on different subjects with different group members, depending on experience and progression. Each night the group progresses through different topics with locations chosen to suit the subject. Some sunsets and afterglow sessions are also undertaken as the group venture high above the clouds ready for nightfall on Mount Teide.
Tenerife Astrophotography Workshop Locations
The fieldwork predominantly takes place on Mount Teide National Park (Parque Nacional del Teide) some 2000m – 2400m above sea level high above the cloud inversion. Occasionally coastal locations in the north may be used for sunset and some nightscape work.
The Tenerife Astrophotography Course Covers the Following Core Topics
Single-frame exposure techniques & double-frame blended exposure techniques
Different focal lengths and calculations
Stacking & star trackers
Star trails & vortex star trails
Milky Way panoramas (Mosaic)
Filter effects, when to use them, advanced blending techniques
Milky Way time-lapse & day to night time-lapse
RGB Editing for nebula (astro-modified cameras; not required for workshop)
In-depth night sky and location planning on Photopills, Stellarium, light pollution maps & other resources
Post-production using Photoshop, Lightroom, plugins, PTGui, Sequator, Starry Landscape Stacker, StarStax and more.
Also included: Cable car excursion up to Mount Teide for the sunset and the worlds largest shadow (Mt Teide’s shadow over the entire island and Gran Canaria)
ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY Fieldwork Equipment
Full frame, crop sensor, and micro four-thirds can be used, alongside larger format cameras; however, as technology and therefore techniques and workflows advance, it is recommended the camera body has an absolute minimum ISO of 6400, with 12800/25600 and above preferred.
- Camera body
- Wide lens (fast if possible but F4 can be used if the camera has high ISO capabilities)
- A range of focal lengths as fast as possible for more advanced photographers wishing to undertake longer focal length Astro work
- Tripod
- Remote timer or long exposure bulb control built-in on the timer
- Star Tracker if possible
- Spare camera batteries
- Head torch with a red mode (this is not for night vision, it makes it easier to work as a group, and stops us from blinding one another)
- Warm clothes and layers, hiking boots/trainers
- (April workshops can see temperatures on the mountain tops range between 0° -10°, May 4/6° – 12°, and June 6° – 14°, sometimes there can be cold winds; summer clothes are required for the day, and winter clothing is recommended for the fieldwork.

Post-production & Planning Necessities
The planning and post-production are absolutely critical elements of nightscape photography, hence they have been included in our group workshops since 2014. For those that don’t use Adobe and using other post-production software suites, it will be up to you to transfer the workflow to your chosen software suite; the second phase of the workflow requires software with layers (ie Photoshop or similar).
- Lightroom (please make sure this is Lightroom Classic)
- Photoshop (or another suite with layer options)
Other useful software that is often covered: PTGui, LRT Timelapse, StarStax
- A laptop running the above ideally with a minimum of 8GB Ram (though 16GB Ram or over is recommended for advanced post-production)
- This part of the workshop can be undertaken with no laptop and note writing, though following on a laptop is recommended
Recommended apps that will be taught and demonstrated:
- Photopills (paid one-time subscription)
- Stellarium (free on desktop), free mobile version, the full mobile version now costs a fee
- Starwalk 2, Sky Guide or similar “what’s in the sky mobile/tablet application”
TENERIFE Photography Workshops FAQs
Ollie has been running Tenerife and La Palma Astrophotography workshops for a number of years, running four/five a year several years ago. He knows the best locations to suit different aspects of what he will teach the group each night, every night includes a full schedule of tuition. Read more about the tutor and workshops here. Read more about the tutor and workshops here.
Tenerife is a dedicated astrophotography workshop (also includes sunsets/golden hour landscape photography). Basic astrophotography techniques for those that need it, more advanced photographers will learn stacking, tracking, panoramas, deeper sky objects, planning, post-production. Please see workshop description for a more detailed account.
All EU countries have freedom of movement which includes the Canary Islands as they are a Spanish archipelago. The UK does not need a visa at this point, though that is set to change in 2026. Most other countries will need a Schengen Visa.
The days in Tenerife are warm to hot. The nights are cold due to the altitude, and again, depending on the workshop dates can range from 4°c to 12°c.
Light summer clothing is required for the daytime and winter clothing is needed for the astrophotography work.
- Comfortable light hiking pants
- Windproof heavier duty hiking pants
- Coat/down jacket (thermal if possible)
- Base layers
- Multiple thermal fleeces or underlayers that can be layered on one another
- Thermal socks (feet always get cold first undertaking night photography)
- Hiking boots or trainers
- Hat/gloves/snood/scarf
- Sunscreen
Nice to haves!
- Hand warmers (throw away or electronic)
- Feet warmers/battery socks
- Lightweight neck scarf/snood (dust protection)
- Swimwear if you wish to use the pools in the day
- Gym kit if you wish to use the gym
There are one or two 30/40 minute hike (2/3km over an even surface with one 5 metre rocky step area. There is a steep hill, lose underfoot, that takes around 15 minutes to locate and walk down, then around 15/30 minutes to return to the minivan. Tenerife is marginally easier than the La Palma workshop, neither are overly strenuous. Very long hours under the stars on your feet, or portable stool.
Tenerife is self-catering, and we stock up in a well-stocked supermarket and make journeys back there for fresh produce several times, or when needed by group members. We also eat at local restaurants for lunch several times (especially the excellent pizza nearby) and a group meal on the last evening.
TENERIFE Photography TOUR ACCOMMODATION
Ollie has used multiple villas and accommodations on Tenerife over the years for the tours, searching for the perfect fit.
Accommodation
We use a huge 7-bedroom villa to “luxury” specification with sea views and the pool right outside the door. Communal area containing a large TV and sofa, pool table, veranda, full hob and oven, dishwasher, fridge freezer and coffee maker. Multiple bedroom configurations and 6 x WC’s (to include one in the kitchen and one outside).

Tenerife Island
Known for its tourist and beach resorts, Tenerife’s real gem is its high volcanic national park “Parque Nacional del Teide”, which boasts an Martian-like volcanic landscape that complements landscape astrophotography to the fullest, providing an abundance of foreground interest and excellent visibility of the cosmos. The cloud inversion (known locally as Belly of the Donkey) caused by the trade winds is also spectacular, and we get to photograph it from above during the golden and sunset hours.
