This workshop includes innovative night sky photography planning, shoots and tuition from advanced beginners to intermediate level.
Expertise
Suitable for all levels except complete beginners, you will need a strong understanding of manual mode, apertures, ISO, and shutter speeds.

Join us for a photographic expedition through Namibia, a country defined by vast space, ancient landforms, and some of the darkest skies on Earth. From sweeping desert vistas and striking geological features to wildlife and naturally, star-filled nights of astrophotography, this journey is designed for photographers who want time, access, and expert guidance.
Created for passionate photographers of all levels, the expedition has been created to cater mainly for astrophotography and the late nights and type of setup this requires, but will also include landscape and wildlife photography. Each location is selected for its photographic potential, allowing you to work thoughtfully with light, scale, and subject.
NAMIBIA PHOTO TOUR INFORMATION
Namibia’s landscapes feel elemental and timeless. Towering red dunes rise from the Namib Desert, salt pans stretch endlessly beneath expansive skies, and desert-adapted wildlife moves through terrain shaped over millions of years. When night falls, darkness reveals extraordinary views of the Milky Way and the southern constellations.
On this workshop, you’ll photograph dramatic desert landscapes, remote wilderness regions, and wildlife in natural environments. Nights are dedicated to working under Namibia’s pristine skies, focusing on composition, technique, and the relationship between land and stars.
This photographic journey takes us through one of the world’s most visually powerful environments, offering the rare opportunity to capture both Earth and sky at their most expansive.
The dates have been optimised for astrophotography from the very first, to the last night of the tour.

Landscape & Astrophotography
- Sossusvlei Dunes: Capture sweeping sand dunes under star-studded skies; iconic shapes and shadows make dramatic foregrounds.
- Deadvlei & Namib Desert: Silhouetted dead trees against orange dune backdrops.
- Spitzkoppen: Martian red rock landscapes and huge red rock archs.
- Quiver Trees and Desert Rock Formations: Shipwrecks, fog, and ocean waves backing onto desert dunes.
- Astrophotography and epic Milky Way Images: Namibia’s dark skies make it one of the best places globally for astrophotography. Accommodations in some of the best spots have been reserved for 2/3 nights instead of the usual whistle-stop one-night tours. We aim to see fewer locations, but capture more well-thought-out, stunning images.
Wildlife Photography
Wildlife at Dusk & Dawn: There is ample opportunity for wildlife shoots with plenty of grazing around some of the accommodation we use. There will also be opportunities to stop en route to our destinations.
Namibia Photographic Journey Itinerary
Please note:
The following itinerary is indicative and may change to suit operational logistics.
30th May – Windhoek – Kalahari Region
Travel south into the Kalahari, where red sand, acacia trees, and open horizons define the landscape. Late-afternoon light brings warm tones and long shadows across the dunes followed by starlit landscapes.
31st May – Kalahari to Quivertree Forest
We travel to the quiver trees, arriving before dusk to scout compositions. After dark, the area offers exceptionally clear skies, making it ideal for night and Milky Way photography, with the trees providing strong foreground structure for long-exposure work.
1st & 2nd June Quivertree & Giants Playground
Two days fully immersed in the local quiver tree landscapes and the dramatic Giant’s Playground rock formations, exploring and photographing the area by day and under the night sky without being rushed to race to the next location.
3rd June – Garub Station
One night at a desert lodge near Garub Station, offering a minimal structure in remote desert surroundings and dark skies for night photography.
4th June – Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
Photograph the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei and the skeletal camelthorn trees of Deadvlei at sunset, offering striking contrasts between shadow, sand, and sky before using our quirky desert resort cabins and outside trees for nightscapes.
5th June – Namib Desert Landscapes
A slower-paced day working with dune forms, desert plains, and minimal compositions. After dark, the Namib’s vast silence creates ideal conditions for nightscape photography.
6th June – Swakopmund and Coastal Desert
Explore the coastal desert and surrounding areas, with shipwreck opportunities, textures shaped by wind, and wide open spaces stretching to the sea.
7th June – Swakopmund to Spitzkoppe
Head inland to the granite peaks of Spitzkoppe, often called the “Matterhorn of Namibia.” The dramatic rock formations provide powerful foregrounds for both sunset and night photography.
8th June – Spitzkoppe
A full day among the boulder-strewn landscapes, arches, and open plains. The isolation and clear skies make this a standout location for astrophotography.
9th June – Damaraland
Travel north into Damaraland, a region of rugged mountains, dry riverbeds, and ancient geological features. The sense of scale here is immense and humbling.
10th June – Lodge North Windhoek
For our last night, we travel to an outback lodge just north of Windhoek.
11th – Windhoek
Transfer to the airport.

Fieldwork Equipment
Full frame, crop sensor, and micro four-thirds can be used, alongside larger format cameras. This workshop is aimed at photographers that have some knowledge of night photography and are at an advanced beginner level with their astrophotography work, it is recommended the camera body has an absolute minimum ISO of 12800 for this workshop.

- Remote timer or long exposure bulb control built-in on the timer
- Multiple spare camera batteries
- Head torch with a red mode (this is not for night vision, it makes it easier to work as a group, and stops us blinding one another)
- Light clothes alongside warm clothes and layers, days will be warm, to hot with cold nights
Post-production & Planning Necessities
The planning and post-production are critical elements of astrophotography; hence they have been included in our group workshops since 2014. However, the Namibia Workshop involves driving vast distances for the best locations, so to explore in the daytime, we sacrifice post-production sessions. Instead, we will arrange a group post-production session via Google meets TBA at a mutual time and date after the workshop.

NAMIBIA Photography Workshops FAQs
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many travellers can enter Namibia visa-free or obtain a visa on arrival, while others must apply in advance. Please check the requirements for your passport before travel.
Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended for warm daytime conditions, along with sun protection. Early mornings and evenings can be cold, especially in desert regions, so warm layers such as a fleece or insulated jacket are essential. Comfortable walking or hiking shoes are advised, and neutral colours are best for wildlife viewing.
An average level of fitness is sufficient. Expect walking on sand and uneven ground, early starts, and long days of travel between locations. Wildlife photography may also involve extended periods of standing or sitting.
The tour is suitable for all experience levels. Instruction is adapted to individual ability, though a basic familiarity with your camera and tripod use is recommended.
You’ll receive hands-on guidance in astrophotography, landscape composition, and wildlife photography. This includes night-sky techniques, working with natural light and foregrounds, camera settings, tracking options, and field workflow, with additional advice on post-processing approaches.
This tour is led by experienced photography tutors with a strong background in astrophotography workshops and remote-location travel. The focus is on practical, in-field instruction across Namibia’s most visually striking regions.
By combining dark-sky locations, iconic landscapes, and dedicated wildlife time, the tour offers a balanced and thoughtfully paced photographic experience, designed to help you develop both technical skills and a diverse portfolio in one of Africa’s most compelling environments.
Travelling to Namibia
Windhoek is easy to travel to with multiple flights from Johannesburg (JNB), Frankfurt (FRA), Doha (DOH), or Addis Ababa (ADD)
Transfers
Inbound
Transfers are from Windhoek Airport or a hotel within Windhoek between 12:00 and 13:00.
Outbound
Transfers to Windhoek and the airport reach the airport by 12:30.
Accommodation
We will be using a mix of accommodations, namely desert cabins and ranches, 2/3 bedroom farmhouses, and hotel rooms. There is no camping, but the accommodations are a mix of luxury outback resorts to basic farmhouses and cabins in the more remote regions.
Shared and single occupancy avaialble, though on a first come first served bases.
DISCLAIMER
Namibia is a remote and environmentally demanding destination. Weather conditions, road quality, wildlife movement, and access to certain locations can vary and may affect the planned itinerary or photographic opportunities. Participants should be prepared for changing temperatures, long travel days, uneven terrain, and limited services in remote areas. All activities are conducted with safety, environmental responsibility, and respect for wildlife as a priority.
