Aurora – Mid latitude

Mid-latitude aurora refers to areas such as Scotland, Denmark, Estonia, North US, Australia and NZ.  Mid-latitude Aurora is a striking phenomenon that can occasionally be observed during periods of intense solar activity. While lower-latitude northern countries are generally situated outside the primary auroral zone, strong solar storms or coronal mass ejections can expand the auroral oval, bringing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) to lower latitudes. During such events, Scotland, particularly in its northern and more remote areas like the Shetland Islands or the far north of the Highlands, may experience vivid displays of shimmering greens, pinks, and purples dancing across the night sky. These spectacular auroras provide the opportunity to witness the beauty typically reserved for more northerly regions.
