This Workshop includes landscape and travel photography tuition covering varied aspects and styles throughout Greenland’s unique landscapes and villages.

This workshop caters for photographers at all levels though knowledge of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO range and use is required.

Guided by a seasoned photographer, undertake expeditions across frozen fjords and through towering icebergs, where you will be helped to capture the magic of this icy wonderland, from the mesmerising Northern Lights dancing across the night sky to utilising the moon (which doesn’t set for several days due to its circumpolar cycle, and carefully selected tour dates). Each moment presents an opportunity for breathtaking photography.
Immerse yourself in the unique Inuit culture, meeting locals in picturesque settlements and witnessing their traditional way of life against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains. GREENLAND PHOTOGRAPHY ITINERARY
* Full details TBC
Day 1 – Arrive Ilulissat – Transfer to accommodation.
Day 2 – Ice fjord cruise followed by the Aurora if the skies are clear.
Day 3 – Snowshoe or taxi to Ice Fjord Centre and shore of the ice fjord for landscapes and nightscapes.
Day 4 – Sermermiut hike to the edge of the fjord on the north side and trail (some may find this to challenging and wish to take this time photogrpahing the local area).
Day 5 – 35-minute plane, then 15-minute helicopter over to Uummannaq/settle into accommodation, followed by photo opportunities.
Day 6 – Dog sled into Uummannaq Fjord, or lake (ice permitting), photograph trapped icebergs, ice fishermen , or frozen lake ice formations, followed by Northern Lights photography if skies permit.
Day 7 – Uummannaq village photography/evening twilight and nightscape
Day 8 – Uummannaq village photography/evening twilight and nightscape
Day 9 – 15 Min helicopter over to Quaarsut/35 min flight to Ilulissat, optional group meal at the best hotel and highly rated restaurant in Greenland.
Day 10 – Transfer to airport.
*** Please note: the itinerary is not indicative, and activities are subject to change in line with sea ice, weather, Greenland Air operations, and tour operators; the itinerary gives a rough guide of the type of activities undertaken, and weather can change drastically between Ilulissat and Uummannaq meaning activities and location stays have to be swapped around or substituted***
GREENLAND FIELDWORK EQUIPMENT
Full frame, crop sensor, and micro four-thirds interchangeable lens cameras can be used, alongside larger format cameras. High end compacts with manual settings can also be used on the Greenland tour.
- Camera body (spare body if possible due to low temperatures/potential failure)
- Wide lens (fast if possible but F4 can be used if the camera has high ISO capabilities)
- A range of focal lengths up to 400mm or over if possible for lunar, potential wildlife, and close up photography
- Sturdy tripod
- Remote timer or long exposure bulb control built-in on the timer
- Spare camera batteries
- Head torch with a red mode (this is not for night vision, it makes it easier to work as a group, and stops us from blinding one another)
Post-production & Planning Necessities
The planning and post-production are absolutely critical elements of lunar and Northern Lights photography, hence they have been included in our group workshops since 2014. For those that don’t use Adobe and using other post-production software suites, it will be up to you to transfer the workflow to your chosen software suite; the second phase of the workflow requires software with layers (ie Photoshop or similar).
- Lightroom (please make sure this is Lightroom Classic)
- Photoshop (or another suite with layer options)
- A laptop running the above ideally with a minimum of 8GB Ram (though 16GB Ram or over is recommended for advanced post-production)
- This workshop can be undertaken with no laptop, though please bring a note taking method

The days in Greenland will average between -20°C to -5°C, however, the air is dry and if there is no breeze it is often easier to spend time outdoors than in 0°C but with wind, or wet humid climate.
Full Arctic clothing is required day and night.

This tour uses a high standard of accommodation considering the remote locations, has been explored and researched in-depth to include astrophotography and travel photography aspects other tours don’t include. Established photographer and tour leader with over 20 years professional photographic experience and over a decade of unique and independent tour development and delivery. There are several 30/40 minute hikes/walks on icy roads where it is better to use crampons. To approach the ice fjord, snow shoeing for 20 minutes will be required. To gain the best views of Ilulissat, a 15 minute walk and large staircase. Taxis, and in the case of snow shoeing, snow mobiles can be used at participants expense unless included within the itinerary. There will be long hours in very cold temperatures.
Weather is generally more stable than places such as Iceland, with far more clear sunny days. February is a drier month than the summer months, though naturally what does fall from the sky will be snow, with winter blizzards possible due to location.
The days start getting much longer in February, in fact they increase in length by 10 minutes per day with the sun rising around 10:50 and setting around 16:30 in the first week of February (Ilulissat); however Nautical Twilight (beautiful light blue light, often with deep pre-sunrise pinks) begins at 08:00 and ends at 19:00.
Traditionally, Ilulissat would hover around the -20°C mark, though in recent years with global warming it can rise up to -4/5°C. The air is dry, so it’s known as a dry cold, and easier to work with than humid climates with temperatures around zero and strong winds. Hotels and houses are heated very well; however arctic winter clothing is required.
Greenland is self-catering with the exception of a group meal in the Icefjord hotel offering a taste of some of the finest cuisine in Greenland. The group will eat at local eateries and prepare meals on their own, or as a group with supplies from local stores.

Ilulissat
Ilulissat, situated on the west coast of Greenland, is a charming town renowned for its stunning natural wonders, most notably the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ilulissat Ice fjord. The town is named after the massive icebergs that often drift through its waters, creating a mesmerising spectacle against the backdrop of the Arctic landscape.
Oqaatsut
Oqaatsut, a quaint fishing village on Greenland’s west coast with only 30/40 permanenant inhabitants. The settlement offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Greenlandic life. With colorful houses against a backdrop of dramatic fjords, this tranquil settlement invites visitors to explore its rugged landscapes and pristine waters.
Uummannaq
The remote village of Uummannaq, located in northwestern Greenland, is a striking town set amidst breathtaking Arctic landscapes. Its most iconic feature is the Uummannaq Mountain, a heart-shaped peak towering over the surrounding fjords, which gives the town its name, meaning “heart-shaped” in Greenlandic. The town’s colorful houses cling to the rocky coastline, offering stunning views of icebergs drifting in Disko Bay.
TRAVEL
Transfers
Transfers are made by minibus and taxi to our hotels and houses in Ilulissat and Uummannaq.
Transfer to the Icefiord Hotel ill be made from the airport via the hotel minivan when you arrive in Ilulissat.
We will then use the Icefiord Hotel minivan to transfer back to the airport
Accommodation
We use a mix of higher-standard hotels and fully equipped private apartments. Single and shared occupancy bedrooms are available (double or single beds). The Icefiord Hotel is currently classed as the best hotel in Greenland.
Group emails are set up once the group is fully booked, as an icebreaker, and also to serve as a Q&A platform.
Please note deposits are non-refundable and balances are due 120 days prior to the workshop commencing.
