Solar Eclipse 2026 Photography TOUR
Nestled within its own vineyard in the Rioja region, our hotel sits inside the eclipse path, placing us just moments from the line of totality and 1 minute 29 seconds of totality.
This workshop takes a different approach to the average eclipse tour. Rather than relying on a single location, we have several carefully chosen sites across Spain, allowing us to adapt to the forecast and maximise our chances of clear skies.

Spain Workshop Structure and Overview
Meticulous planning has gone into the 2026 Solar Eclipse tour taking place across central and northern Spain. The dates for the solar eclipse on the 12th of August 2026 coincide not only with a new moon, perfect for astro, but also the peak of the Perseids meteor shower.
Given the general busyness of peak summer, and the heat of August predominantly rendering landscape photography with unfavourable conditions, and the astronomical nature of a solar eclipse, it was only natural to tailor this event into an astrophotography workshop alongside the eclipse. Logically, weather cannot be guaranteed for the eclipse or astrophotography, but with multiple contingency locations in place for both elements, the tour leaders will work hard to try and make sure the team are situated on locations that give the most optimum results possible.
In-depth weather studies show weather is not guaranteed at this time of year, from potential cloud in the mountains, to possible summer thunderstorms on the plains; on previous years, even the sunny island of Mallorca has been under a blanket of cloud on occasion! Of course, there could be radiant sunshine across the entire of Spain.
In light of the aforementioned, and the importance of trying to make sure the team is in the right place, at the right time, a central position has been chosen for the first four nights of the tour and the solar eclipse basecamp, centred right in the path of the line of totality. Having this central position enables the group to go the extra mile if required, we can reach the mountainous north in four hours, or the southern coast and Valencia region within 3 hours. Though, naturally it is hoped that these extreme measures will not be required, and the local castles and villages suffice.

2026 Solar Eclipse Tour FIELDWORK EQUIPMENT
These lists are not indicative and will depend on knowledge, equipment and budget
Solar Eclipse
- Solar tracking mount/scope (optional)
- Solar eclipse sun filters telescope or camera or both
- Solar eclipse glasses
- Equitorial
- Smart telescope capable of time lapsing sun and moon, i.e Seestar S50, Dwarf Lab 3
- Full equipment list to be sent to the group in advance of the workshop commencing and discussed between us and the group
Landscape & Astrophotography
Full frame, crop sensor, and micro four-thirds can be used, alongside larger format cameras; however, as technology and therefore techniques and workflows advance, it is recommended the camera body has an absolute minimum ISO of 6400 due to the low light nature of astrophotography photography, with 12800/25600 and above preferred.
- Camera body (spare body recommended if possible)
- Two cameras will allow for one being left on a timelapse and one controlled manually at different focal lengths
- Wide lens (fast if possible but F4 can be used if the camera has high ISO capabilities)
- Wide angles for astro work, 24-70mm – 800mm depending on desired image outcome and sun size
- A sturdy tripod or two
- Remote timer or long exposure bulb control built-in on the timer
- Multiple spare camera batteries
- Head torch with a red mode (this is not for night vision, it makes it easier to work as a group, and stops us blinding one another)
- Filters for landscape, sunset
- Hiking boots, light summer clothing, mosquito repellent
Post-production & Planning Necessities
The group will cover post-production and planning sessions, both pre-and post eclipse looking at both the eclipse and astrophotography images.
The planning and post-production are critical elements of landscape and nightscape photography ,hence they have been included in our group workshops since 2014. For those that don’t use Adobe and are using other post-production software suites, it will be up to you to transfer the workflow to your chosen software suite; the second phase of the workflow requires software with layers (ie Photoshop or similar).
- Lightroom (please make sure this is Lightroom Classic)
- Photoshop (not essential but our nightscape workflows include layer masking)
- A laptop running the above ideally with a minimum of 8GB Ram
- This part of the workshop can be undertaken with no laptop and note writing, though following on a laptop is recommended
Recommended apps and websites that will be taught and demonstrated:
- Photopills
- Starwalk II, Skyguider Pro, Stellarium or similar
