PROVENCE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
PROVENCE PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR – OVERVIEW
Provence photography workshop and tour covering landscape photography alongside landscape astrophotography providing the opportunity to capture the best of the day’s, and night’s, light over fields of lavender in bloom.
The workshop will adjust for a good balance of sunrises, daily evening light and sunsets, alongside night photography. Post-production and planning tuition will also be delivered throughout some of the afternoons; this tour is not heavily night photography orientated and the group will undertake a maximum of two night photography sessions (Milky Way), and a minimum of two sunrises in order to refrain from undertaking sunrises on the same day, or morning after Milky Way photography. The group will undertake late afternoon, golden hour, sunset, and some blue hour photography daily.
Due to the nature and time of year of this workshop, this is a more laid-back and easy-going, slower-paced workshop, with downtime and several visits to restaurants to sample local cuisine factored in.
- July fieldwork times = 05:00 – 10:00, 18:00 -22:30, 18:00 – 02:00

Classic locations around the Valensole area will be visited alongside outlying less frequented areas. The lavender bloom depends on the spring the region has had and often the north higher latitude fields bloom a little later. There will be visits to the north fields and the beautiful towns of Sault and Aurel; framed by lavender to their flanks. Other locations include the classic Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, and the stunning town of Gordes commanding views over the Plateau of Vaucluse.
This workshop can be undertaken with a high-end smartphone and tripod, however, these will need to be top-of-the-line with high ISO and manual settings to get the most out of the workshop, and achieve basic results with regard to any night photography tuition. Although a smartphone can be used, a camera and lens system that will allow graduated ND and ND filters, alongside a basic filter kit is recommended as the minimum.
Fieldwork Equipment
Full frame, crop sensor, and micro four-thirds can be used, alongside larger format cameras, it may even be possible to undertake this workshop with a high-caliber smartphone and tripod; please contact Ollie for further details.
- Camera body
- Wide lens (fast if possible but F4 can be used if the camera has high ISO capabilities)
- Multiple lenses with a range of focal lengths
- Sturdy tripod
- Remote timer or long exposure bulb control built-in on the timer
- Spare camera battery
- Head torch with a red mode (this is not for night vision, it makes it easier to work as a group, and stops us from blinding one another)
- Summer clothing, hiking boots/trainers or sturdy running trainers that are able to withstand dusty terrain. A light jacket or hoodie-type clothing for the night photography sessions. Light summer clothing for downtime around the villa and pool. Mosquito and biting insect protection which may include light long-sleeved tops, trousers, summer clothes and/or repellant, sun-block, sun hat, and sunglasses
- Please note, unfortunately, lavender season is at the height of the summer, and temperatures can be extremely hot in the mid-afternoon
Post-production & Planning Necessities
The group will cover two post-production and planning sessions looking at both landscape and night sky photography images that we produce whilst in Provence.
The planning and post-production are critical elements of nightscape photography, and landscape photography, hence they have been included in Ollie’s group workshops since 2014. For those that don’t use Adobe and are using other post-production software suites, it will be up to you to transfer the workflow to your chosen software suite; the second phase of the workflow requires software with layers (i.e Photoshop or similar).
- Lightroom (please make sure this is Lightroom Classic)
- Photoshop (or another suite with layer options) * Photoshop is not essential for the Provence workshop, however it is highly recommended for more advanced photographers looking to use layering on their landscapes and nightscapes.
- A laptop running the above ideally with a minimum of 8GB Ram though the recommended is now 16GB
- This part of the workshop can be undertaken with no laptop and instead taking notes, though following on a laptop is recommended

PROVENCE Photography Workshops FAQs
The Provence Photo tour is a laid-back combination workshop that balances a few sunrises with a couple of Milky Way shoots, alongside daily golden hour and sunset photo shoots, taken in some of the best locations Ollie has researched and visited within the region. The Provence Landscape and Astrophotography Tour will help participants with both landscape and astrophotography where required from composition to technique. The group also undertake post-production and location planning sessions.
All EU countries have freedom of movement to include France. The UK does not need a visa at this point, though that is set to change in 2024. Nationals from most other countries will need a Schengen Visa to visit France.
Provence is often hot with mild nights in lavender season, on the rare occasion there is rain/thunderstorms they are brief, and the rain is usually warm.

Only light fitness is required for the Provence Photo Tour, though the days can be long and there may be up to a couple of hours on your feet with the camera equipment for long shoots on one location (early morning/astrophotography).
The Provence Photo Tour is self-catered with supplies collected from local supermarkets and the group usually eat out at a café in the day, or restaurant in the evening, at least once a day.
PROVENCE Photography TOUR ACCOMMODATION
The Provence accommodation is situated south of the Northern Lavender fields, 50 minutes from the famous Valensole Plateau and around 40 minutes from the iconic Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque and the spectacular town of Gordes; situated in a highly photogenic traditional village.

A 7-bedroom (9-bed), 5-bathroom prestige villa built in traditional style with exceptional modern finish, and air conditioning (rare for the area). Full kitchen with all modern conveniences and large dining areas both in- and outdoor. An outdoor pool area and solarium.
Provence Region
The Provence region during lavender season is usually dry and hot with easy walking, though some fields are large and on a hillside. The landscape hosts an array of spectacular villages and towns that are easy to explore and provide vehicle access and parking.
TRAVEL
The meeting point is at Marseille Airport pick up point between 1 pm – 2 pm on the 6th.
Drop off back at Marseille Airport on the 12th will be approx: 1 pm.
Transfer from, or two hotels within the airport region is also possible, please provide details once you have booked the tour to arrange transfer times.Transport is included throughout the workshop in two new 9-seater minivans, numbers limited to five, and the tutors to allow for plenty of room.
Two neighboring high-end traditional Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur villas are reserved with single occupancy bedrooms (unless sharing requested) and multiple bathrooms.
