Description
Aurora Scotland
Northern Lights over Dale Mill, Westerdale, situated in Caithness, north east Scotland, taken on a November night with winds not far off gale force and dodging ice-cold rain showers.
The predicted solar activity was correct, the weather calmed and cleared for long enough to unveil a nice display of the Northern Lights over the River Thurso and old mill.
The pillars of the Aurora easily seen with the naked eye within the beautifully preserved dark skies of Caithness.
The Scottish Highlands are ideal for capturing the Northern Lights due to its Dark Skies areas, and Caithness is no exception. Dale Mill in Westerdale is one location much photographed, drawn and painted, and currently delivers electricity to the nearby hotel, Dale House; it was built in the late 18th/early 19th century.
