Description

Duncansby Sea Stacks, Scotland

Duncansby Sea Stacks, seen here under a crescent moon, alongside Jupiter and Saturn.

On the remote far north eastern coast of Scotland not far from John O’ Groats, these stacks are estimated to be around 6000 years old and stand 60 metres high.

The huge sea stacks complimented by the crescent moon with the rest of its surface clearly visible due to Earthshine, alongside Jupiter and Saturn almost paired together in a rare conjunction; an occurrence known as “The Christmas Star” that only happens every several hundred years.

It’s hard to do the scale of the mammoth sea stacks at Duncansby justice within a landscape photo, though the astrophotography elements within this scene help to create a surreal and ethereal mood.
