Description
Zante Shipwreck Sunset
The most famous image of the Greek island of Zante is the shipwreck on the beach. The beach now bears the name ‘Shipwreck’ although originally it was called Agios Georgios.
In 1983 the Panagiotis sailed into water from which it could not escape from, and, after the crew abandoned it, she washed ashore – with an illegal cargo of 2000 cigarettes! Later locals looted it for whatever they could find, and she was left to rot in the limestone gravel of the beach.
